Course Description

Clinical education is a foundational component of nursing education. Clinical instructors have a fundamental role in the education of nursing students, to ensure they are adequately prepared with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to work in a wide-range of practice settings and speciality areas, and meet entry-to-practice competencies. This six-week foundational course encompasses clinical education at the baccalaureate level in acute care settings, and public health and community health care placements. Course themes include: roles and responsibilities of the clinical instructor; monitoring and evaluating students in clinical settings; developing good patient assignments; mentoring and coaching students; creating a positive learning environment for students; roles and responsibilities of the educational unit in clinical education; and, issues, challenges and strategies for clinical instructors.

Course Audience

This course is designed for Registered Nurses interested in becoming clinical instructors and novice nursing clinical instructors teaching at the baccalaureate level. 

Course Objectives 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the roles and responsibilities of a nursing clinical instructor at the baccalaureate level;
  2. Describe and apply the theoretical principles of clinical instructing in acute care, public health and community health-care settings;
  3. Create a positive learning environment for students;
  4. Mentor and coach students in clinical settings;
  5. Analyze and evaluate nursing students’ clinical knowledge and skills in acute care, public health and community health-care settings;
  6. Describe the issues and challenges facing clinical instructors, and identify and apply constructive strategies that enable positive learning experiences and outcomes for students; and,
  7. Recognize the role of the educational institution in supporting clinical instructors to ensure optimal student learning outcomes.

Refund and Cancellation Policy for CASN Courses

  • Registrations that are cancelled up to one week before the start of the course will be refunded minus a $50 administrative fee.
  • Registrations that are cancelled with less than one week’s notice will not be refunded, unless the spot in the course can be filled by another participant. The responsibility to fill the spot will rely solely on CASN staff and every effort will be made to fill the spot.
  • There will be no refunds issued once the course begins.

CASN reserves the right to cancel this course if it does not meet minimal group requirements.
