Title: Care of older persons in hospital: Nurse knowledge and learning needs

Description: In this presentation, Dr. Hunter will discuss her own as well as other recent Canadian research on nurses’ knowledge and learning needs regarding older person care in the hospital setting. A profile of older persons in hospital will be presented, and the potential harms they face, particularly preventable functional loss, that nurses have a role in mitigating. Implications for further research, continuing education and health service delivery will be considered.

Dr. Hunter is a Professor with the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta and Nurse Practitioner with specialization in gerontological and continence nursing. In addition to teaching and research, she maintains a clinical practice at the Glenrose Continence Clinic. Research interests include: hospital care and transitions for older persons, the concepts of safety and harm as they relate to preventable functional loss for older persons in hospital and lower urinary tract symptoms in older adults.  She is an active member of the International Continence Society (ICS) currently serving on the Scientific Committeee. In May of 2019, she was Co-Chair for the 2019 Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association Biennial Conference.
